about me

I was born and raised on the Isle of Wight on the South Coast of the UK and I still live here now with my wife and two children. I’m 38 years old and am a full time Highway Design Engineer and now, I guess, a part time artist as well!

From a young age I’ve always been very creative and liked to draw and paint. I was always praised for my artwork from primary school through to getting top grades at GCSE and A Level. From there I got into Highway Engineering and luckily my day job has allowed to me to be creative in many ways such as CAD design, graphic design and conceptual artist impressions to name a few.

I really enjoy the day job but I’ve always wanted to use my natural creativity for something more – hearing ‘your talent’s wasted here’ at work gets a little tedious after a while!

Outside of work I’m very passionate about my hobbies and these haven’t changed since I was young. I’ve always loved cars and bikes, whether it’s mountain or motorbikes. You could say I’m a bit of a geek as although most of the time I can’t remember what I did yesterday I can always remember a specific detail of a rally cars livery or what Carl Fogarty’s leathers were like in 1995. I’ve always had an attention for detail and my friends often rib me for my encyclopaedic knowledge of the things I’m interested in.

Several years ago I owned a Caterham 7 Tracksport with a good friend of mine and ended up producing some artwork of that car (which he’s always had framed in his house). The following years I created a few more motorsport and mountain bike images and then last year the same friend persuaded me to showcase my art and do something with it (thanks Graeme!). This lead me to starting ‘@mdawsonart’ on Instagram and since then I’ve been overwhelmed with the response it’s got and the amazing people it’s put me in contact with.

I genuinely love creating the art pieces, everything from researching the subject and getting every little detail as accurate as possible through to seeing the final piece printed and framed. I like to hope that because I’m so enthusiastic about the things I’m drawing, the final artwork looks better as a result.

Thank you for visiting my website and really hope you enjoy my work.

Cheers
